The Role of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) in Business Life

While examining the job postings, you have seen criteria such as teamwork compatible, energetic, knowing to work target-oriented. These criteria constitute emotional intelligence characteristics. Emotional intelligence encompasses the entire emotional world of man. The important thing about emotions is to be able to cope with emotions and to direct them in the right way. In this sense, it is gaining importance in today’s business environment.

Although the main resource of successful people is seen as having high intelligence (IQ) in academic terms, it has been observed that some people fail in business life despite having a high IQ. This has led to the discovery of emotional intelligence (EQ). The concept of emotional intelligence was first used in 1990 by psychologists John Mayer and Peter Salovey. Emotional intelligence is not unchangeable like IQ. It consists of learnable social and psychological skills. In addition, emotional intelligence is not the opposite of academic intelligence, but complementary.

Emotional intelligence is the source of factors such as being empathic, expressing and understanding emotions, ability to adapt to the environment, ability to solve problems, being patient, being sympathetic, and showing respect. In other words, individuals with a high level of emotional intelligence maintain their motivation in the face of failure, can control their emotions, and empathize with other individuals.

Emotional intelligence is an important factor in organizational psychology and entrepreneurship. The characteristics of entrepreneurs are as follows:

Focus on purpose
- Perseverance
- Problem solving
- Taking risks habits
- Reliability
- Result methodical
- Have self-control
When we examine the characteristics, we see the factors that are the source of the development of emotional intelligence. Based on this, we can conclude that the emotional intelligence levels of entrepreneurs are high. Entrepreneurs and managers with a high level of emotional intelligence achieve success by directing organizations better. Otherwise, individuals who do not have entrepreneurial characteristics and have low emotional intelligence may fail to work in the fields of management and entrepreneurship.

Organizations are structures that are very open to motivation and indoctrination. Emotional intelligence enables organizations and employees to be more successful in their jobs by giving them competitive power. The reason why emotional intelligence criteria come to the fore in today’s business life is that individuals with high emotional intelligence are more successful. The emotional intelligence levels of all employees are expected to be high, not only as managers and entrepreneurs.

Employees in an organization with high emotional intelligence feel that their ideas are important and valued for the organization. Working in an organization that values itself is a reason for satisfaction for the individual. Individuals working in such organizations will be committed to their jobs and will want to exceed the expected performance of them because they have accepted and strongly believed in the goals of the organization.

In summary; Employees who are technically adequately equipped are not the only way to ensure success in organizations. Successful organizations: they must have the skills of teamwork, good human relations, working in harmony. These reveal the importance of emotional intelligence.
